‘At least 60 killed’ when 100-year-old bridge collapses at popular tourist spot as survivors scramble to safety

DOZENS of individuals are feared useless after a bridge collapsed at a tourist spot in India.

Around 500 individuals had been on the just about 100-year-old suspension bridge over the Machchhu River in Morbi, Gujarat, when it crashed into the water, witnesses mentioned.

Chief Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel mentioned authorities are monitoring the scenario.

He tweeted: “I’m deeply saddened by the tragedy of suspension bridge collapse in Morbi.

“Relief and rescue operations are ongoing by the system. The system has been instructed to organize rapid therapy for the injured.

“I am in constant contact with the district administration in this regard.”

The bridge had undergone renovation work and had solely reopened 4 days in the past, in accordance to native media.

It is feared 60 individuals might have died within the incident, studies News18.

Patel added that compensation can be given to the households of these killed.

He added: “I express my condolences to the families of the citizens who lost their lives in the tragedy of Morbi.”

Indian President Droupadi Murmu tweeted: “The tragedy in Morbi, Gujarat has left me anxious.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the affected people. Relief and rescue efforts will bring succour to the victims.”
