If you’re looking for a lender with a lot of customer service features, Rocket Mortgage may be more appealing. Rocket Mortgage ranked No. 2 in J.D. Power’s 2023 Mortgage Origination Satisfaction Study. It also has longer hours for telephone customer service support and a live online chat feature.
Rocket is featured in our guide to the best mortgage lenders.
If you are in search of a new construction loan or renovation loan, Caliber Home Loans is clearly the better match. Rocket Mortgage doesn’t offer those types of loans.
Caliber Home Loans vs. Carrington Mortgage Services

Home loan types Conforming, ARM, VA, FHA, USDA, new construction, renovation | Home loan types Conforming, jumbo, FHA, USDA, VA |
Alternative credit data No | Alternative credit data Yes |
If you are looking for a lender with physical branch locations nearby, Caliber Home Loans may stand out to you more. Caliber Home Loans has branches in more locations across the US than Carrington Mortgage Services. You also can’t get a mortgage from Carrington if you live in Massachusetts or North Dakota.
However, if you have a poor credit score or no credit score, Carrington Mortgage Services may be a better fit. You can use alternative forms of credit to apply for a loan.
How Caliber Home Loans works
Caliber Home Loans is a national mortgage lender with physical branches in every state except Hawaii, New Hampshire, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, or Wyoming. While there aren’t branches available in all major cities across the US, you can apply for a mortgage online from anywhere in the country.
Caliber Home Loans has a variety of home mortgage products including:
- Conventional mortgages (conforming loans)
- Jumbo mortgages
- FHA mortgages
- VA mortgages
- USDA mortgages
- fixed-rate and adjustable-rate mortgages
- home renovation loans
- new construction loans
Caliber Home Loans doesn’t offer home equity loans, HELOCs, or reverse mortgage options.
However, it does provide streamline refinancing options for any VA loans or FHA loans.
If you don’t have a credit score or have a poor credit score, Caliber Home Loans doesn’t let you use alternative credit data — like past utility bills. You’ll have to show a credit score.
The minimum credit score needed for a loan will depend on the type of loan you apply for. Generally, FHA loans tend to have more lenient requirements and may be easier to apply for than conventional loans.
However, if you don’t think you’ll meet the minimum credit score requirements, you’ll want to consider other lenders.
If you need to talk to someone about your loan, customer service is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST, and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. CST.
If you have specific questions about an in-process loan, you’ll need to get in contact with a Caliber Home Loans consultant. There may be a loan consultant in a nearby branch you can talk to or one online. You’ll have to comb through this list online to see what your options are.
