Access Holdings names Bolaji Agbede acting CEO following Herbert Wigwe’s death

Access Holdings Plc has announced the appointment of Ms Bolaji Agbede as the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer.

  • The company’s Board of Directors announced Agbede’s appointment, noting that it is subject to approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
  • Agbede’s professional experience spans banking and business consultancy services.
  • Agbede joined Access Bank in 2003 as an Assistant General and has held various roles within the bank.

The appointment comes after the passing of the former Group Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Wigwe. Wigwe died in a helicopter crash on Friday, alongside his wife, Doreen, son Chizi and a former chairman of the Nigeria Exchange Group, Abimboloa Ogunbanjo.

In a statement released on Monday, February 12, 2024, the company’s Board of Directors announced Agbede’s appointment, noting that it is subject to approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

What the statement said:

“The Board of Directors of Access Holdings Plc (‘the Company’) has today announced the appointment of Ms Bolaji Agbede as the Acting Group Chief Executive Officer of the Company following the unfortunate demise of its former Group Chief Executive Officer, Dr Herbert Wigwe, on February 9, 2024.

“The appointment is subject to the approval of the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

Agbede’s professional experience spans banking and business consultancy services.

She began her professional journey in 1992 at Guaranty Trust Bank, followed by her role as Chief Executive Officer at JKG Limited, a business consulting firm, in 2003.

Agbede joined Access Bank in 2003 as an Assistant General and has held various roles within the bank.

From 2010 to 2022, she served as Head of Group Human Resources before being appointed as the founding Executive Director of Business Support in 2022, a position she held until her recent appointment as the Managing Director.

Agbede earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Lagos and a Master’s of Business Administration Degree from Cranfield University in the UK in 2002.
